The old are forgotten in this pandemic

‘The mental health of older people is seriously affected’

• I FEEL strongly that the people who are forgotten in this Covid-19 lockdown are the old, often lonely.

Old and vulnerable people used to rely on libraries, social centres, lunch clubs, further education classes, even pubs, because they are lonely.

Now these are all closed and now thee is nothing for them – nowhere open for a cup of tea, to meet (for exercise) in the park or elsewhere.

It’s not always easy to walk that far. And a big problem is the lack of toilets. The government just does not seem to think of that.

So many people rely on these groups and don’t have a single friend to form a bubble during lockdown, because they rely on several people for their friendships. The mental health of older people is seriously affected.
