This school site, of course, has value

10 May, 2019

• THE closure of any school must cause anguish and concern to all involved, and the news of the proposed closure of St Aloysius Primary will obviously upset many, (St Aloysius Primary School could shut by Christmas, April 25).

I have known of the school for over 50 years and have always been impressed by the commitment of personnel to the advantage of the thousands of pupils who have passed through their gates.

The Late Cardinal Basil Hume was of the expressed opinion that any inner-city school should be shown every encouragement and support, not because they deserved it but because the Church should do so.

Unfortunately, like many others, I surmise the eventual real estate value of the school site might have been a factor in the decision probably to close the school.

Hopefully, should such a sale occur the community of Somers Town and not the coffers of the RC Diocese of Westminster will be the beneficiaries.
