Town trio are making history

Footballers tell of pride as they become first girls to sign for club

23 November, 2018 — By Steve Barnett

Scarlett Mitchell, Lacey Morahan and Olivia Bishop have joined Kentish Town Football Academy

STRIKER Scarlett Mitchell, goalkeeper Lacey Morahan and defender Olivia Bishop proudly hold up the one shirt that they are even prouder to pull on than an Arsenal one.

That’s because the gleeful Gooners have etched their names into the history books after becoming the first female players to sign for Kentish Town Football Academy.

The trio took a quick break from training at the Cantelowes Gardens Sports Pitch on Thursday to reveal their excitement at playing for their new outfit in the Regent’s Park Youth League.

“It feels really good to join Kentish Town and be part of a team,” beamed Scarlett, aged seven, who lives near to the pitch in Camden Town and goes to Torriano Primary School.

“I’m going to play actual matches, which is really exciting.”

Eight-year-old shot-stopper Lacey, who lives in Queen’s Crescent, has already played in a cup game for Kentish Town. Explaining why she wants the number one jersey, the St Dominic’s Primary School pupil said: “As a goalkeeper I get to play the whole match. I also get to dive around and stuff.”

Meanwhile, seven-year-old Olivia, whose mum Tina use to work as a sports development officer for Camden Council, wore a cheeky grin as she revealed the best thing about joining Kentish Town was “training with the boys and getting to beat them.”

Kentish Town FA co-founder and head coach Tom Looney said the hat-trick of signings all “earned” their places.

“There’s no barriers in football, if a kid is good enough we’ll sign them up,” he added. “We’ve got a limited number of places within our teams, and the last thing that we want is children standing on the sidelines not playing. Scarlett, Lacey and Olivia have all worked really hard in training and earned their places in their respective age groups.”
