Tulip Siddiq welcomes Keir Starmer’s leadership contest victory

'He's been a good friend through thick and thin'

04 April, 2020 — By Richard Osley

Hampstead and Kilburn MP Tulip Siddiq said she celebrated Mr Starmer’s win with colleagues via Zoom due to the coronavirus lockdown

TULIP Siddiq this afternoon (Saturday) welcomed her fellow Camden MP Keir Starmer’s victory in the Labour leadership contest.

The Hampstead and Kilburn MP, who was elected to the House of Commons for the first time in the same 2015 intake as Mr Starmer, had endorsed his bid to succeed Jeremy Corbyn.

She had also backed new deputy leader Angela Rayner to be the party’s No. 2.

But Ms Siddiq ruled out pushing for a shadow cabinet role when Mr Starmer names his frontbench team in the coming days.

“Everyone will talk about Keir’s work as the Director of Public Prosecutions, his handling of the shadow Brexit brief, his professional expertise,” Ms Siddiq told the New Journal.

“All of these things are important. But for me, it’s about Keir’s integrity and his personal values which I’ve seen first hand. His commitment to working with hard to reach communities, his family values, his absolute dedication to serving his own constituents and for being a good friend through thick and thin.”

She added: “I’m proud to share a borough with him and proud that he’s now leader of our party.”

Ms Siddiq said she was happy with her “current brief” and not looking for a place in the shadow cabinet.
