UCLH specialist says every woman should consider benefits of HRT

09 February, 2017 — By Tom Foot

EVERY woman should consider the benefits of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) carefully before deciding whether to take it, according to a specialist at University College Hospital.

Dr Vikram Talaulikar – a menopause specialist at the Euston Road NHS hospital – said that use of HRT was on the rise again. “The use of HRT plummeted following large research studies at the beginning of the century,” he said. “But re-analysis of some results and further clinical evidence has led to increased HRT prescribing again.”

For women who develop menopausal symptoms prematurely the benefits “far outweigh any potential risks”, he said. Dr Talaulikar was writing in the Menopause Exchange, a free, independent quarterly publication set up by pharmacist and health specialist Norma Goldman in 1999.
