A BUTCHER’S shop which has been in the same family for five generations has gone up for sale.

The Hillman Butchers, in Kilburn High Road, was founded by the great-great-great-grandfather of current owner John Hillman in 1848.

“My children are all pursuing other careers so, without another generation of the Hillmans to pass my expertise on to, it seems the ideal time to hang up my apron,” said Mr Hillman, who first started working at the shop when he was 16. “My father, Michael, who passed away two years ago, worked here until he was 83 and, like me, he absolutely loved the profession and dealing with our customers.”

He added: “We have so many loyal customers and, while it will be a wrench to sell the business because of the history, I’m looking forward to retirement and spending more time with my family. “

The shop, which has a traditional front sign at number 209 on the high road, is on the market with a new 20-year lease at a price of £249,950.

Mr Hillman said: “It’s been a fantastic experience and I’ve enjoyed dealing with our suppliers, catering customers and the general public, many of whom I’ve come to count as friends over the years.”
