Vroom with a view in Regent’s Park
Outdoor sculpture exhibition includes eye-catching E-Type by Brazilian artist

WHAT nicer way to spend a summer’s evening than a stroll through that most regal of outdoor central London spaces, the delightful Regent’s Park?
And while its stunning beds and designs are always a thrill in the summer months – the array of colours are mesmerising – there is also the added draw of the Frieze Art Fair, a free, outdoor sculpture exhibition that brings even more beauty and interest to the gorgeous landscape.
Among the pieces that grab the attention is this eye catching E-Type by Brazilian artist Vik Muniz. As a pretty fanatical collector of Matchbox cars in younger days, it immediately spoke to your correspondent: the worn paint work and plastic moulded interior ignited long dormant memories of driving such toys around a patterned sitting room carpet… what a playful idea.
Muniz has created a full-size reproduction of a 1973 Jaguar E-Type Matchbox toy car, which the accompanying bumph echoes exactly the feelings it has ignited as Diary strolled by: “…this speaks of childhood memories and questions value within art history.”
Muniz, based in Brooklyn and Rio De Janeiro, rather than London, has forged a name for himself for both sculpture and photography.
He uses materials he has found discarded for a lot of his pieces, everything from toys to food to household objects, and then creates scenes that mimic historic art works or moments from popular culture.
One recent work enlisted the help of catadores, a group who live on Rio rubbish dumps and scour for things they can sell on, recycle, or use.
His efforts have been rewarded not only with the plaudits from arty types but he was also recently appointed a Unesco Goodwill Ambassador for his social activism.
To see a giant version of a car that Diary dreamed of one day climbing behind the wheel of, in such special surroundings, brought even more pleasure to an already pleasurable evening stroll. Bravo.
