The sign comes down at Waterstones

BOOKSELLERS Waterstones is moving out of its Camden High Street shop after 25 years.

The chain’s staff were today (Monday) boxing up stock behind locked doors after a final day of trading in Camden Town on Saturday. Surprised customers were being directed to alternative branches in Hampstead and Gower Street.

The sign has already been removed from the top of the shop and a poster announced that the company was “sad’ to be leaving. It has said it has been unable to agree a lease with its landlords.

The same stretch of the High Street already has a large empty unit where the post office previously operated, while the shop next door to Waterstones, the Madhouse clothes shop, has signs announcing a closing down sale.

On social media, Waterstones said it hoped to return to Camden Town, telling one disappointed customer: “You’ll be pleased to hear a new premises is currently being looked into, so hopefully we’ll be back in Camden sometime in the near future (and fear not, all staff have gone to other branches).”
