We support the change to allow all members a vote
22 November, 2018
• AS trade unionists and members of affiliated socialist societies to Holborn & St Pancras CLP, we would encourage members to attend the special meeting on November 27 and support the change to allow all members a vote.
It was a Unite the Union affiliate branch who proposed the motion to the CLP. At the moment only certain members of the party get to vote in meetings, which mean many members are locked out of having a say and getting involved.
All-Member Meetings (AMMs) will be a democratising move that gives each and every member a vote and a say.
More, not fewer, trade unionists and members of affiliate societies will be able to participate in the local party, as currently only a limited number are permitted to take part as delegates from their respective unions or affiliate societies and these routes are not properly advertised to members.
At present the number of delegates does not take into account the membership of any union branch or affiliated society as they are allowed up to five delegates, no matter how large or small their membership.
Further, with AMMs, socialist societies and trade unions will still be affiliated to the local party, send motions to meetings, elect representatives to be officers of the local party’s executive, and nominate members for officer positions.
All members of unions and socialist societies – if they are party members – will be able to attend and vote at AMMs.
The meeting is on November 27 at St Pancras Church, Euston Road, NW1. Doors open at 6.30pm and close at 7.30pm sharp. Bring your membership card or ID.
