Why are the trees in Camden pollarded hard?

28 November, 2019

• AS a frequent visitor to Kentish Town, I have often been puzzled by the severe and frequent pollarding.

We know trees are one of the best ways of taking carbon out of the atmosphere and putting oxygen back into it.

We know trees offer cooling shade in the increasingly hot days of summer. We know trees afford nesting sites, shelter and food to bird life.

We know at least two political parties have committed to mass replanting of trees nationwide. And we know that the labour-intensive business of pollarding uses up public funding. Yet they are cut. Why?
