Yes, closing church doors is an abuse of power

20 November, 2020

‘Yellow would be a more appropriate colour for cardinals and bishops’

• JOHN Gulliver, while I would disagree with you and the CNJ on virtually everything, your piece about churches closing without so much as a murmur is absolutely correct, (Closing church doors is an abuse of power, November 12).

And to think that cardinals and bishops wear red to symbolise their willingness to shed their blood for the faith. Unfortunately yellow would be a more appropriate colour.

Hilaire Belloc neatly summed up what any Catholic with faith the size of a mustard seed thinks about those in charge: “The Catholic Church is an institution I am bound to hold divine – but for unbelievers, a proof of its divinity might be found in the fact that no merely human institution conducted with such knavish imbecility would have lasted a fortnight”.

I would add “and faithless docility” after imbecility.
