Your cue to join the chorus

Rehearsals are starting for seasonal concerts – and choirs are welcoming new recruits

Choirs, including the North London Chorus, are looking for new singers

The sound of choral societies can be heard again next week as rehearsals get under way for autumn and Christmas concerts. Potential new recruits are most welcome to come along to “taster” rehearsals.

Popular non-auditioned North Camden Chorus ( rehearses every Tuesday evening, starting next Tuesday, at William Ellis School, Highgate Road. This term, the programme includes Mozart’s Coronation Mass and several shorter Christmas-themed pieces. New singers are being sought by the choir, particularly sopranos and tenors, the latter male or female. If you’re interested, go to William Ellis School to register at 7pm. The first rehearsal starts at 7.30pm.

Non-audition choir The Fleet Singers (fleet begins rehearsals on Britten’s Ceremony of Carols next Monday evening at Gospel Oak Methodist Church, Agincourt Road, NW3. If you’re interested in joining, turn up for a taster session before 7.30pm either on Monday or later.

Big beast of the non-auditioned choirs is Barts Choir (, this term singing parts of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and Handel’s Foundling Hospital Anthem, including the Hallelujah Chorus. To taste this very friendly, welcoming choir, go along to the City Temple, Holborn Viaduct, before its rehearsals start at 6.45pm on Monday evening or the following week.

There are vacancies for singers in all parts, especially tenors and basses, at the adventurous Camden Choir ( To join, you need to be able to read music and there’s an informal voice test. This term, the choir is rehearsing music on the theme “A Celebration of Europe”.
